3 Steps To Achieving Your Goals (whether it’s March, June or October)

We typically think about goal-setting at the beginning of a year. So many of us set goals and resolutions for our business and personal lives in January and then go about our daily lives.

We look up a few months later and haven’t really made much progress. But rather than just wait until the next January rolls around, NOW is the perfect time to dust those goals off and work toward achieving them.

Here are 3 Steps To Achieving Your Goals (whether it’s March, June or October):

STEP 1: Evaluate your goals based on the outcome you want to achieve

Creating the right goals can lead to the right outcomes. So first, ask yourself what the outcome is that you are looking to achieve from your goal. What will you be able to do once you achieve that goal? Goals must always lead to growth.

It’s often wise to look beyond your initial goal to the goal beyond the goal. As an executive coach, we call it your why and can help you take that additional step in articulating the goal beyond the goal so that you can achieve it.

Sometimes it may be hard to push forward to reach a goal, but understanding and reminding yourself of your why (the deeper meaning or passion behind your goal) can keep you moving and pushing forward to achieve it.

STEP 2: Break your goals down into daily bites to create new habits

Desmond Tutu once wisely said that “there is only one way to eat an elephant: a bite at a time.” What he meant by this is that everything in life that seems daunting, overwhelming, and even impossible can be accomplished gradually by taking on just a little at a time.

Now, I’m not planning to eat any elephants. But my experience as an executive coach tells me that if we can break a big goal we have into smaller “bites” — things we can need to do each month, each week and each day as well as ways we can measure our progress — that it will become much easier to accomplish them and to stay motivated to do so.

This process will also lead to creating amazing new habits. New habits have led to greater effectiveness and success, leading to a life of growth.

STEP 3: Seek assistance in achieving your goals where you need it

Goal setting seems like an easy task and a very personal one. And it is. But actually achieving goals often requires a support network and even an executive coach to help you understand the why behind your goals, break them into manageable pieces, hold you accountable and cheer you on.

Find someone who can walk with you through this process.

As you seek to grow personally and professionally always look to establish new and on-going goals (not just in January of each year) that will lead you to a life of amazing and powerful habits.
