Do you ever feel there are not enough hours in the day to accomplish all you need to do?

Does it feel that time is in control rather than you?

We all have the same time allotted to us in life, but why does it seem that some are more in control of their time and thus their life while others struggle?

Many people just accept life – rather than making a decision to lead their lives.

Take sales people for instance – I saw a report once that suggested over 75% of a person’s time is involved with activities that do not directly generate sales.

We can see the Pareto rule so clearly when it comes to the sales industry. The 80/20 principle. We get caught up in activities 80% of the time that brings in only a 20% reward.

You can apply this great principle to any part of life as a challenge. Maybe you consider yourself to be a very busy person – you would say that your diary is packed out.

However maybe the more important and challenging question is not how full is your diary – rather who is filling your diary?

We can get caught up in so many activities and never finish off a job well and on time.

If you are feeling that life is running away and the best you can do is just try to keep up, maybe you need time out to reflect.

Peter F Drucker encapsulates this predicament so well when he said ‘Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action.’

Becoming more productive, does not mean you become busier. The choices we make with our time will determine how successful we become. It will take focus and commitment.

However the result will be that your effectiveness will greatly increase.

Some key questions that should be addressed

1) If you are in a sales environment – are there non-fee earning activities I can deploy to someone else?

2) If so, who is the best person for that task?

3) What time of the day do you feel most effective?

4) Who can I become accountable to with my time?

What processes do you have in place to track the results that you are looking for?

Those who ‘win’ when it comes to managing their time enjoy the greatest rewards, they know and appreciate the importance and difference of efficiency and effectiveness

Efficiency is knowing what is the right thing to do.

Effectiveness is ensuring that the right things are accomplished.

I am a great believer that you will always find the time to do those things you want to do.

To become even more successful with your time and your life will require commitment. Delegating tasks that you don’t need to handle. Taking away distractions – maybe social media – not settling for the 80/20 rule.

Having processes in place to see a greater return with your time – which will help you enjoy greater Influence, Impact and Income.
